On-Demand Skate Decks

A couple weeks ago, Zazzle.com launched their on-demand skate deck printing service. (If you’re not familiar with Zazzle, it’s a site where an artist can upload designs to be sold on shirts, shoes, postage stamps, etc. Then Zazzle creates a product only when someone orders it. This allows the artist to sell their shiz without worrying about creating too little/too much product to meet demand.) Shortly thereafter, Artsprojekt announced that their teaming up with Zazzle to provide some kick ass art for the new decks. Artsprojekt has some pretty heavy hitters like OBEY, Mars-1, and Dalek among many others.

As if that wasn’t enough art/skate awesomeness, on Monday I got the latest popdeck.com (Threadless but for skatedecks) newsletter announcing that they’re teaming with big name artists. We’re talking No Pattern, MWM Graphics, Go Media and of course many others.

I’m really curious about the quality of these decks. I’ve heard the Zazzle decks as being comparable to giclee prints. It would be pretty impressive if it’s true. Coincidence that these two companies did this at the same time or was it all planned? Either way, we win.
