The Bake Sale is the first EP from The Cool Kids. They’re a Chicago based hip-hop duo who’s single Black Mags has been floating around the internet for a while. They’re one of those groups who got famous through myspace. They were even featured on a Tivo commercial long before their first album dropped.
I’ve been waiting for this album for a while (I first heard Black Mags over half a year ago) and I’m not disappointed. The Bake Sale is a lo-fi throwback to the 80′s – a time where rappers weren’t bragging about how many they shot and instead were spittin rhymes about their new shoes and haircuts. All of their beats are self produced and very minimal. It’s a breath of fresh air in a genre where overproduction is king (Timbaland, anyone?).
The album art is by Brooklyn based Kimou Meyer aka Grotesk. I think it matches perfectly with homemade retro style of the album.
