At least that should not be its only concern. As a illustrator/designer first, motion designer second, and web designer/developer a distant third, I’ve struggled as I’ve tried to make the transition to being a web designer/developer close to first. It took me a while to realize that the true power of web design is the fact that it’s an interactive medium, a two way conversation if you will; it’s not like a poster or a tv ad that talk at you. However, if you pick up an interactive annual or a gallery or best web design, all you see are, what are essentially, moving ads. They look nice and give you some semblance of interactivity through a few ineffectual buttons, but they don’t really aspire to what the Web can be. So then why is it that these pretty but empty sites keep winning awards? Jeffery Zeldman of A List Apart says that it’s because most people simply don’t understand web design. Web design is a different beast from any other type of design and should be treated as such. His very well written article can be found at A List Apart.
