I’ve been meaning to put together the latest newsletter, but I’ve had an unprecedented week of lots of work and an appallingly little amount of sleep.

Last Friday I took the day off of work so that I could participate in a Layer Tennis Qualifier match. Layer Tennis pits two designers/illustrators/what-have-you against each other in a battle of aesthetics and wit. One person kicks it off with an image and the opponent tears it apart. The two people go back and forth for a total of 10 rounds. My opponent was art director/web designer Phil Coffman and I kicked off the match with this bold statement
 Check out the full match.

The rest of the weekend was a breeeeezzzee. My first weekend in a long time where I didn’t have any obligations. I did nothing but play video games and eat pizza.

I was also in two art shows—Monster Show Five at Domy Books in Austin, TX and a Monster art show here in Minneapolis at Pink Hobo.

My pieces for Monster Show Five – 9″x12″ ink and pastels
Time Is Money

My piece for Monster Art Show—9″x12″ Linocut

Peekaboo

I’ll post the process for creating a linocut once I get some time.

Well, great relaxing weekends don’t come for free. I’ve been at my day job almost 90 hours since Monday for a project with a heinous deadline. From Wednesday to Friday, I was awake for 56 hours with only 2.5 hours sleep jammed in there some where. And, here I am, still at the studio. Working on a Sunday. A Sunday that just happens to be my birthday

I don’t usually take a month off from the blog but this has been a crazy crazy month! I would recount in detail here all that happened, but it was such a blur. I don’t remember most of it. I know I didn’t get enough sleep, worked a lot, and, somewhere in there, I saw Ratatat and Arcade Fire live (two different shows). I might write up a post on the Arcade Fire concert, but I’m not very good with words. Trying to describe the experience would be an injustice to said experience. If you have the chance, go see them!

Every 3 months, I like to stop, take a breath, and look back at what I’ve accomplished. I do that by posting everything I’ve created in the past quarter to a project on behance.net. The first quarter 2010 did well and was featured on typographyserved.com. The second quarter 2010 did even better making it to the behance front page! I received a lot of kind words and some very cool projects.

Well I’ve posted the third quarter 2010 and I need your help to try to get to the front page again. Just visit the project page and click on the “Click to Appreciate” button at the bottom (only if you actually do appreciate the work of course).

Dear reader, before you go, I have but one more favor to ask of you. Would you vote for my latest Threadless submission?

Now, you might be asking yourself, “What do I get for all this appreciating and voting?” Well, let’s just say, I have something in store for my fans. Stay tuned!

I’m excited to announce I’ll be working with Contributor on a unique charity art auction! Rather than try to weakly summarize what the whole thing is about, here’s the official press release.

ABOUT “ONE WAY OR ANOTHER”

We’ve teamed up with Society6 and Club Mumble to curate our second art show in support of Contributor. Building on the success of last year’s group show, “One Way Or Another” plays upon the personal nature of a skateboard. Things like how you grip your board, how loose your trucks are, and heck, how you know that the size of your wheels down to the slightest of millimeters will make the hugest difference. In the end, this little wooden toy seems to be made just for you.

Combining an open call at Society6 and a group of specially invited guests (curated by Andy Jenkins, Bob Kronbauer, Sandro Grison, Justin Cooper, Mike Giles & Annie Lam), we have selected over 40 artists/collectives from around the world to create original artwork on full-size blank maple decks. These specially made boards will be sold at our online shop, with all the proceeds going directly back to getting skateboards to kids across Canada.

What makes this project unique is that rather than people buying a already finished piece of artwork, their purchase will commission an artist/studio to make a board especially for them, so when it arrives, it’s an awesome surprise – kind of like a familiar chocolate with a hidden tasty centre!

ART SALE INFO

To see full listing of artists, please visit www.wearecontributors.com
* Sale continues from July 8 to August 15, 2010
Online shop can be accessed directly at wearcontributors.bigcartel.com

ARTIST LISTING

Art Works Every Time, a group art show I’m in, opens in LA tomorrow! I won a spot in the show through the Beautiful/Decay and Colt45 t-shirt design competition. You can find a short (but sweet) interview with me about my work in the show over at beautifuldecay.com

The opening should be a rockin’ good time with live music, vegan Colt 45 flavored ice cream, plenty of Colt45 to drink, and of course, great art. Fellow MPLS based artist Colin Strandberg is also going to be in the show among a bunch of other really talented folks.
